Ushio, Inc. has installed 36 “Care222® i series” anti-virus and sterilization UV irradiation devices that can be used in an occupied environment. It was installed in a hospital (Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, hospital director Kenmasa Maniwa) and started operation in April.

This installation is for spaces where the operation of an unspecified number of people is particularly high, such as waiting halls and toilets where there is a high risk of virus invasion, around reception machines and checkout machines, and waiting for inspections in outpatient clinic areas. It was introduced as an anti-virus application.

In addition, in order to further develop the joint research on the safety of 222nm ultraviolet rays that Ushio and Kobe University have been promoting for many years, the purpose is to conduct field tests on the anti-virus and sterilization effects of 222nm ultraviolet rays.

In the future, Ushio will continue to introduce Care222®-equipped products to hospitals, public facilities, transportation facilities, etc., and contribute to the realization of a “safe and secure” society by improving the hygienic environment and anti-virus measures.

Care222 is a new disinfecting light source that, even though not harmful to the skin or eyes of humans or animals, deactivates bacteria and viruses in the same manner as conventional ultraviolet sanitizers.

Care222 uses an excimer lamp (a mercury-free UV excimer light source produced by Ushio especially for outputting monochromatic ultraviolet with a primary wavelength of 222 nm) in combination with a special optical bandpass filter (200 to 230 nm) which passes only ultraviolet wavelengths that have no harmful effect on people.

The use of Care222 in public places is a safe and effective way to limit the spread and transmission of air-mediated microbial diseases, such as schools, hospitals, stadiums, sports grounds and offices, and this approach may help to limit seasonal infections, the spread of tuberculosis and major epidemics.
